Intervention for collection of cells
Availability of cells for lining (coating) of a prosthesis depends on collection of endogenous cells.
That is why a short vein segment will have to be collected from one of your arms or legs approximately three weeks prior to the scheduled cardiac bypass intervention. Endogenous vascular cells then may be obtained from such vein segment for coating of an artificial vascular prosthesis. The probability of accompanying complications is relatively low, as the above approach is a minor intervention. There may be wound infection, haematoma, thrombosis or tenderness in the vicinity of the vein collection site.
